This piece is about Saltaire village in Fire Island, New York.
1. Long Time No Sea
The Summer Folks reunite at the start of each summer season and catch up on the year’s news.
2. Tiny Crinkled Noses
The kids of Saltaire squinting at the sun, the grown-ups, one another. Pure goofiness, meanness, joy, and bursts of inner sophistication that come with being an unselfconscious force of nature.
3. September 21, 1938
The date of the hurricane that leveled plenty on the Eastern seaboard. One Saltaire survivor’s account was particularly striking — her family’s house (with family holed up inside) was filled to the attic with seawater. In the attic, her mother handed dresser drawers out to the kids while water began seeping through the floor. Luckily, the water subsided, and when the family was able to finally leave the house, they were completely lost — the house had drifted several miles down the coast.
4. March of the Wagons
Those ubiquitous toy-like, red wagons used by everyone to cart everything throughout the bumpy, wooden boardwalks of the car-free village. At times, there is traffic. It is not unusual to see grownup folks with make up and nice clothes pulling these wagons.
5. Stars
Clear summer’s night, stars and moonlight reflected in calm waters.
